Everybody lives in a catchment
Catchment areas include all the land through which water flows - from the hills, through the valley to the river mouth at the coast.
Where is the Pioneer Catchment?
The Pioneer Catchment is on the Queensland coast between Rockhampton and Townsville, about 900km north of Brisbane. We are at the southern end of the famous Whitsunday Islands. Our area includes the coastal catchments of Alligator Creek and St Helen’s Creek in the north, Sandy Creek and Sandringham Creek in the south and areas in the west to the top of Eungella in the Clarke Range. It covers the local government area of Mackay City and part of Mirani Shire. We have a population of over 100 000, most of whom live in Mackay City, while the current boom is creating development around some of the coastal and valley townships. Our creeks and rivers all run into the waters of the Great Barrier Reef lagoon.
Pioneer Catchment and Landcare Group is one of the three catchment and landcare groups that make up the Mackay Whitsunday Natural Resource Management region. Our neighbour to the north is Whitsunday Catchment Landcare and in the south is Sarina Landcare Catchment Management Association
